Liquid Resize, also known as re-targeting or content aware image resizing by seam carving/seam removal, is based on the work of http://www.faculty.idc.ac.il/arik/imret.pdf. Check out this video on YouTube for an introduction to this new image sizing technique.

So what's Liquid Resizing all about? Wouldn't it be cool to shrink your images without losing information on the main part of the image, but only shrinking the background. This application tries to accomplish just that: take a look at the Examples and you will understand.

Here you can download a prototype (for Windows and for Linux) so you can try out the re-targeting technique and see how seam removal works. Highlights of the current version include

  • resizing both width and height of images
  • support for shrinking or enlarging images
  • using transparent masks to mark areas the should be protected (i.e. not altered when resizing)
  • using transparent masks to mark areas the should be deleted (i.e. removed when resizing)
  • saving the result and/or the mask (support for Jpg, Gif, Png, Bmp, Tga, Tiff, and Pcx image formats)
Please keep in mind that a lot of processing power is required, so try it with smaller images first!

It's all about performance (well, more or less ;-) - we've invested quite some time and effort to optimize our seam carving program for performance, and still do - so if you know any other application "out there" that is faster than Liquid Resize, please let us know by posting it in the comments or sending us an e-mail (remove the [NO SPAM] in e-mail address).
Have fun! Comments and suggestions are welcome: either e-mail to Sabet.Ramin[NO SPAM]@gmail.com or leave a note in the Comments section.

Original Image Thumbnail 50%: liquid liquid 50% vs. bicubic bicubic 50%

Two different examples of images resized to both 75% and 50% width can be seen below.
Topmost you see the original image and further down the resized images. On the left are the results achieved with the new re-targeting technology, on the right the results of conventional bicubic resize.

The 3rd example shows you what you can achive when using masks to protect or delete parts of you image.
